Bird Cakes

1 cup crunchy peanut butter (room temperature)
1 cup lard (or Crisco) (room temperature)

2 cups quick oatmeal
2 cups corn meal
1 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar

Cream Crisco and peanut butter.

Add remaining ingredients and mix. May ‘knead’ to do this by hand if your mixer isn’t powerful enough. Good job for kids, if you’ve the patience for a little messy.

Shape into patties that will fit your feeder.

Freeze in zip-lock bags until ready to use.

Bird Cakes two!

In a saucepan over very low heat, stir until melted:
1 cup lard or solid shortening
1 cup of crunchy peanut butter

3 cups plain cornmeal, mix thoroughly.

Stir in any combination of: quick oats, nuts, raisins, chopped apple, black oil sunflower or mixed birdseed, dry bread crumbs, or grated orange peel or dried berries. Combine well.

Pour into a bread pan or other container lined with plastic or foil.
Refrigerate to cool.
Once it’s solid, slice into squares and place into your suet cage.
Freeze extra slices in zip-lock bags until your birdies need more.
